About our council and area
We are the largest council in the North East covering 862 square miles, we have a budget of around 1.3 billion which helps us provide services for more than 513,000 people. Durham is an amazing county at the heart of North East England and has a lot to offer!
The county benefits from easy access to the east coast mainline, Durham is just three hours by train from London and less than two from Edinburgh. County Durham is an excellent choice for education too, with the majority of primary and secondary schools in the region rated 'Good' or 'Outstanding' by Ofsted. Not forgetting world renowned Durham University, in the heart of Durham City.
We have a rich heritage of industry and innovation which continues today. We are home to a broad business base with significant strengths in technology and innovation. There has been huge investment too, bringing a large number of jobs and according to HM Land Registry, house prices are some of the least expensive in the UK, around 46% cheaper than the national average. This makes it a particularly attractive place for those relocating and wanting to invest in an affordable property.
Outside of work, County Durham has something for everyone. Seek out hidden gems in market towns and villages in the Durham Dales, relax and enjoy peace and tranquillity on the Durham Coast, or get outdoors and active with walking and cycling routes revealing unforgettable views across the county. You'll be spoilt for choice with award-winning eateries too. Durham City is home to one of the most recognisable landmarks in the UK, majestic Durham Cathedral. Together with adjacent Durham Castle, this UNESCO World Heritage Site forms one of the most stunning city panoramas in Europe.
We have a vision and three strategic ambitions to develop County Durham over the next 15 years. Our proposed vision for 2035 is that County Durham is a place where there are more and better jobs, people live long and independent lives and our communities are well connected and supported.
