Snow clearance

Find information about road and footpath clearance during heavy snow.

Follow us on Twitter #twittergritterNE to keep up to date with our winter roads service.

When are snowploughs sent out?

The decision on where to send snowploughs during heavy snow is made by our highways team. Priority will be given to the main routes first and not all roads will be cleared.

Footpath clearance

During severe winter weather and following a heavy snowfall, we do our best to clear footpaths in busy pedestrian areas. Paths are cleared during normal working hours with some parish and town councils also providing help.

Which paths are cleared first?

Priority is given to:

  • paths in town centres and busy shopping areas
  • emergency service depots, hospitals, health centres and doctors surgeries
  • aged persons' housing, care homes and areas with vulnerable people
  • libraries and other public buildings

Clearing footpaths yourself

The Met Office's Snow Code gives advice on clearing paths and public spaces safely.
