What Moving Together in County Durham is

Moving Together in County Durham has been set up to help everyone move more, as being more active helps people live longer, healthier and happier lives.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey about the role you play in helping people move more in County Durham.  We had 84 responses, with 85% saying that you are motivated to help people move more and 73% saying that you are able to help others move more.

Moving Together in County Durham has been set up to support everyone to move more, because we know that being active helps people live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

Moving can be anything from walking or cycling to the shops, scooting to school, doing housework or gardening, playing in the park or a game football. As long as you're moving more, it's helping you live a healthier life as well as reducing your risk of illness and improving your chances of recovery. It is also great for your mental health and wellbeing.

Our strategy is helping create as many opportunities as possible for people to move more. By working with you and people from our biggest local organisations to our smallest community groups, we are hoping to make the most of local spaces, places and increase people's motivation to move more.

County Durham is a great place to be active

We live in an amazing part of the country with lots of opportunities to be physically active. Our fabulous beaches and coastal walks as well as our woodland and moorland are great places to go to enjoy the fresh air.  You can make the most of our walking and cycling routes, or just get outside and have fun with your friends and family. We have lots of organised activities too like walking groups, cycling clubs, sports clubs and 15 local leisure centres offering gym, swim and fitness sessions. Find out more in our Leisure & Culture section.

We all have a role to play

Moving Together in County Durham is a movement which will help everyone who lives, works, studies in, or visits our county to take the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of living an active life. And we especially want to support anyone who is finding it difficult to be physically active, to help them find ways to move more.

We can not do it alone though; this is a partnership which places our people and communities at its heart. Find out how you can join us.
