Development for clinicians in public health

We provide various training and placement opportunities for clinicians to continue their professional development and enhance this with development of skills and knowledge in public health.

Junior Doctor training

We support training programmes for clinical staff including junior doctor training by providing sessions on the following:

  • The health of our population - describing the health of our local population and inequalities.
  • Health needs assessment - overview of what it is, how you can better understand population health needs and how it might be helpful in your role.
  • An introduction to population health data such as types of data and where it can be accessed.
  • Overview of health improvement - what it is and local examples of health improvement work, partnership approaches, addressing the wider determinants. Highlights opportunities for doctors to get involved in this work (either through taster days, QI projects or through your everyday role).
  • Tackling health inequalities - local work to tackle health improvement (including work in the Trust) and how this can be addressed in your role.

We are working on how these can be complemented by taster days, quality improvement projects and placements to gain a broader understanding of public health.

Clinical placements

We offer bespoke placements, for example supporting GP career starts or clinicians looking to broaden your understanding of public health as it applies to your practice.

Placements are under the supervision of our Director of Public Health and Consultants in Public Health. These are usually on the basis of one to two days per week for between 6-24 months but can be tailor-made to your circumstances and personal interest.

For example, you may wish to explore:

  • Population health management projects - developing models to predict people at risk of poorer outcomes or inequalities and supporting interventions to improve this.
  • Working in your department to understand and address inequalities in patient access, experience or outcomes.
  • Supporting actions to prevent late diagnosis amongst  specific population groups.
  • Health protection - audit, IPC work, antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Sustainability - projects, actions, audits to reduce waste and reduce environmental impact.
  • Working with public health teams in councils to address broader public health issues such as obesity, alcohol, smoking and substance misuse and the wider determinants of health such as poverty and housing.
  • Working with providers of public health services such as substance misuse services, lifestyle services and social prescribing to improve patient pathways.
