Accessible library services

Many of our libraries are accessible and have an induction loop at the reception desk. We also have a mobile library with easy access.

Large print books and audio books

You can borrow large print books from any library in County Durham. The collection includes fiction, non-fiction and children's titles. Most of our libraries also hold a collection of audio books. Titles are available on cassette tape and CD. Where a library does not hold a collection of spoken word stock, titles may be requested. You will be notified when these items are available for collection.

There is normally a small charge, however spoken word items are available free of charge if you are registered blind, partially sighted or are dyslexic.

Our Library Online facility, allows you to browse through a list of our large print and spoken word stock. If you are a registered member of the library, you can also request items online.

Library services to your door

Books on Wheels is a free service that delivers books if you have mobility problems and cannot use your local library and have no-one to go to the library for you.

The Bookbus provides a mobile library service to older people and people with disabilities in residential homes, day care centres and sheltered housing schemes throughout County Durham. The Bookbus visits over 50 homes, centres and schemes on a three weekly rota.
