Old Cassop Conservation Area

Old Cassop is a small village that lies five miles south of Durham City and a mile to the north west of New Cassop. The village is situated on a hill that rises from Cassop Vale at the edge of the East Durham limestone plateau.

The hamlet is a good survival of a traditional rural settlement that remained largely untouched by the mining industry that transformed the surrounding area. Notable for retaining two working farms at its heart, the hamlet comprises a small collection of traditional and modern houses and agricultural buildings intimately grouped together in a strong landscape setting that retains many remnants of its medieval origins.

The conservation area was designated in 1981 and reviewed in 2009.

Old Cassop Conservation Area Appraisal

To ensure County Durham's conservation areas are properly managed, we produce Conservation Area Character Appraisal documents that will help raise awareness of their special character and interest. The Old Cassop Conservation Area Character Appraisal was formally adopted by our Cabinet on 16 December 2009 and recommends ways to improve and to manage change as well as providing an interesting history and snapshot of the area.
