The Causeway Bridge in Wolsingham

Repair works are due to start on The Causeway bridge in Wolsingham on Tuesday 6 May 2025 and are due to be completed in early 2026.

Wolsingham Bridge Closure

Wolsingham Bridge Downstream Elevation

The Causeway bridge at Wolsingham dates back to 1894 and is located between the Causeway and Wear's Bank. The bridge requires an extensive refurbishment scheme to undertake significant repairs to age-related damage. These critical works will ensure that the bridge can be used for many years to come.

A road closure is needed for road traffic to enable the erection, re-siting and dismantling of scaffolding to take place, as well as for waterproofing and resurfacing of the bridge deck. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

The initial closure will be in place from Tuesday 6 May 2025 for approximately three weeks, with each of the further three closures taking around two weeks, the dates for these will be confirmed in due course. Throughout the closure periods, a diversion will be in place. These closures have been kept to an absolute minimum.

The remainder of the project will be completed utilising temporary traffic lights and will maintain pedestrian and traffic access over the bridge. The carriageway width during the works will be limited to 3.25m, this allows for HGV vehicles however vehicles is excess of this width will need to use the diversionary route.

We would like to thank you for your co-operation and patience during this project.
