Student housing - landlord assurance scheme

Our Durham Student Assured Housing Scheme aims to improve the quality of privately rented student housing and provide a level of assurance for students seeking accommodation. We are currently undertaking a review of the scheme and new applications are not being taken at this time.

What is it?

The scheme is a voluntary code for student landlords that covers all accommodation in Durham and is based on our standards for houses in multiple occupation (HMO). Each property within the scheme will have to meet our HMO standards as well as the criteria in the Durham Student Assured Housing Scheme Code of Standards. We will carry out inspections of each property over the five year period.

Advertising your assured property

You can advertise your assured property in the same way you would a non-assured property, including using estate agents and online portals.

We are working with StuRents, an online student accommodation search platform, to give assured properties a market advantage using their online search. Students looking for accommodation can use StuRents search facility to filter and view assured only properties in Durham.  Use StuRents Integration User Guide (PDF, 2 MB) to find out how you can add your property.
