Protected species

A wide range of species are protected under international, European and national legislation because of their rarity or vulnerability.

In County Durham the protected species most commonly encountered include bats, badgers, great crested newts and nesting birds. As well as the Natural England website, further information can be found on a range of sites.

  • If you think you need a licence for works affecting species such as bats, great crested newts and badgers, guidance and application forms, contact Natural England.
  • If you have concerns over activities that you think may be affecting protected species on council-owned property you should Contact Ecology.
  • If you have concerns over similar activities on other land you should contact Durham Police.
