Permitted hours of employment


Details of the hours young people of compulsory school age are allowed to work in part-time employment.

Permitted hours of employment
 13 and 14 year olds15 and 16 year olds
School days

Between 7.00am and 7.00pm

For no more than one hour before school

For a maximum of two hours in total

Between 7.00am and 7.00pm

For no more than one hour before school

For a maximum of two hours in total

Saturdays

Between 7.00am and 7.00 pm

For a maximum of five hours

Between 7.00am and 7.00 pm

For a maximum of eight hours

Sundays

Between 7.00am and 7.00pm

For a maximum of two hours

Between 7.00am and 7.00pm

For a maximum of two hours

Term time

For a maximum of 12 hours per week, including the weekend

For a maximum of 12 hours per week, including the weekend

School holidaysFor a maximum of five hours per day between 7.00am and 7.00pm, up to a maximum of 25 hours per week (no more than two hours on Sundays)For a maximum of five hours per day between 7.00am and 7.00pm, up to a maximum of 25 hours per week (no more than two hours on Sundays)

Young people must not be employed:

  • for more than four hours without a rest break of at least one hour
  • without a break of two weeks during school holidays in any year
