News-New roundabout to cut congestion at busy crossroads

Published December 03, 2024 10.25am

A new roundabout designed to reduce congestion at the busy Seaton Lane junction is now open.

Offering new links

View south along the A19 southbound off-slip road at Seaton Lane leading to the newly installed roundabout.

Our scheme, which was awarded £5.6 million by Homes England, features a roundabout at the top of the southbound A19 slip road, just before it connects with the B1404 Seaton Lane.

As well as maintaining the A19 slip road's connection with the B1404, the roundabout offers a new northbound link to the nearby A1018.

Part of the A1018 has been made two-way, giving Sunderland-bound drivers exiting the A19 southbound a new route that avoids Seaton Lane, with relevant road markings and signage in place to make the change clear to drivers.

Improved quality of life

Cllr Elizabeth Scott, the council's Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: "We would like to thank everyone for their patience during these works. Although we did experience some unforeseen issues, which caused delays to the completion date, we are delighted to be able to open the new roundabout and link to the A1018.

"Peak-time congestion has become more frequent at the Seaton Lane crossroads in recent years, but this alternative route for anyone coming off the A19 towards Ryhope and Sunderland will make such a difference to drivers and those living nearby. As well as facilitating more housing in Seaham and south Sunderland, it will redirect traffic away from Seaton Lane, improving the quality of life for people living in the area."
