News-Expansion of Sniperley Park and Ride complete

Published November 19, 2024 10.06am

Hundreds of additional parking bays are now available at a Durham City park and ride site following a £2 million expansion scheme.

We have created an extra 261 bays at Sniperley Park and Ride, bringing the total number available to 587. This includes 28 disabled bays, 14 electric vehicle bays, two accessible electrical vehicle bays and three motorhome bays.

The extended car park is open from today (Tuesday 19 November) and follows a successful application to the Government's Transforming Cities Fund.

Perfect timing

Sniperley expansion

We have created an extra 261 bays at Sniperley Park and Ride, bringing the total number available to 587.

Cllr Elizabeth Scott, our Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: "We're delighted work to extend Sniperley Park and Ride is now complete. It's perfect timing for people wishing to travel into the city for Christmas shopping and festive events, and, with the service now also operating on Sundays, it's available seven days a week.

"Sniperley, along with our other park and ride facilities, support tens of thousands of people a year to get in and out of Durham City. As well as playing a crucial role in growing the economy, they also help to reduce congestion and air pollution in the city centre.

"The extra bays at Sniperley will allow even more people to take advantage of this convenient and affordable means of visiting Durham City - whether that be everyday journeys for work, shopping, leisure and health appointments, or tourists coming to see our UNESCO World Heritage Site and other attractions."

The Sniperley Park and Ride site is located between the A691 and A167. We also operate Belmont Park and Ride on the A690 and Howlands Farm Park and Ride on the A177 (South Road).

Services from Sniperley and Belmont run every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm, seven days per week. Services from Howlands Farm run at the same times, Monday to Saturday.

For more details about our park and ride services, including how to apply for a POP card to travel for just £2 a day, visit Durham City Park and Ride.
