Gambling Act consultation

Background

We are required by the Gambling Act 2005 to publish a statement of principles which sets out how we will carry out our work and determine licence applications for a variety of gaming and betting facilities. The policy includes three objectives which underpin the role of the Gambling Commission and ourselves. These objectives are:

• preventing gambling from being a source of crime or disorder, being associated with crime or disorder, or being used to support crime
• ensuring that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way
• protecting children and other vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling

Gambling Act 2005 Statement of Principles

The current Gambling Act 2005 Statement of Principles was adopted on 8 December 2021 and is now due for review. As part of this review, we are consulting on the current Statement and want to know if you think there are any changes or additions that should be included. Are there any local issues associated with gambling premises which are not already addressed that you feel should be included?

The Statement of Principles does not include web-based, on-line gambling or any aspects of gambling advertising or promotion as these are the responsibility of the Gambling Commission. Therefore we are not seeking views on these as part of this consultation.

What happens next

Responses to the consultation will be considered in finalising the new Statement. The Statement will then be presented to a future meeting of our Licensing Committee and our Council by December 2024 for approval before adoption.
