Illegal tobacco
Illegal tobacco is harming local communities across County Durham. It is not a victimless crime and it has serious consequences for health, crime and our communities.
Illegal tobacco is tobacco that has been smuggled into the UK, 'bootlegged' (duty free) or counterfeit (fake). It is common across our communities in the north of England, but it is not welcome on our streets. Research shows that 79% of the public would welcome a crackdown on illegal tobacco.
There are many reasons why this is an important issue:
- Illegal tobacco makes it easier for children to smoke.
- Illegal tobacco brings crime into the community.
- Criminals are selling illegal tobacco while committing other crimes like drug dealing and money laundering.
- Criminals are taking advantage of our community, targeting the young, poor and vulnerable.
