A programme of remedial works has now been finalised which will see Empire Consett undergo essential roof maintenance in the coming months.

The County Durham venue will close its doors to the public temporarily on Thursday 8 February so that works can take place.

Due to the nature of the works and health and safety regulations, it will not be possible for the building, including the venue's café Empire Lounge, to remain open during the work.

Essential roof repairs

Cllr Elizabeth Scott, our Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: "Empire Consett has been providing entertainment to theatregoers and cinema lovers for over 100 years and we understand it is very much the heart of the community.

"These essential maintenance works to the roof will ensure that the venue can go on to give top quality shows and performances for visitors, in a comfortable and safe venue."

Online and telephone bookings will not be affected by the closure, and a temporary Box Office in Blackhill and Consett Park is to be installed for in-person bookings.

The temporary Box Office will be open from 10am to 4pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays whilst the venue is closed.

Empire Consett is due to reopen in Autumn 2024 with works scheduled to be completed in time for the venue's autumn season including Leah Bell and company's magical panto Cinderella.

Ahead of closing, Empire Consett will continue to screen films over the coming week with showings of acclaimed dramas Boy In The Boat and The Holdovers with tickets costing just £5.
