Approved Level 2 Award in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities - with added units in Positive Behavioural Support (PBS)
(This qualification is being delivered in conjunction with the PBS Northeast and North Cumbria Community)
This professional development qualification provides essential knowledge and skills to anyone wanting to actively support individuals with learning disabilities. Units include:the meaning of learning disability, support, legislation, communication and planning and PBS.
Who the course is for
The Award is suitable for people who have contact with individuals with learning disabilities as part of their job. This includes people working in health and social care, people in community and volunteering roles or those working in education, leisure and employment support.
AEB funding is only available for students who live in County Durham. If you live outside this area, the college will discuss funding options with you.
Learning method
This course is a mixture of classroom based and online learning and is delivered over six sessions.
What you will learn
By completing this course, you will:
- understand how legislation, frameworks, code of practice and policies relate to positive behaviour support
- understand the context and use of proactive and reactive strategies
- be able to promote positive behaviour
- be able to respond appropriately to incidents of challenging behaviour
- be able to support individuals and others following an incident of challenging behaviour
- be able to review and revise approaches to promoting positive behaviour
- provide Active Support
- understand how active support translates values into person-centred practical actions with an individual
- be able to interact positively with individuals to promote participation
- be able to implement person-centred daily plans to promote participation
- be able to maintain person centred records of participation
- understand the legislations and policies that support the human rights and inclusion of individuals with learning disabilities
- understand the nature and characteristics of learning disability
- understand the historical context of learning disability
- understand the basic principles and practice of advocacy, empowerment and active participation in relation to supporting individuals with learning disabilities and their families.
- understand the views and attitudes impact on the lives of individuals with learning disabilities and their family carers
- know how to promote communication with individuals with learning disabilities
Developing skills in PBS will help you develop skills so you can:
- develop approaches that support understanding of behaviours that challenge others
- improve quality of life for people with learning disabilities
- ensure people with learning disabilities are treated as individuals with equal human rights as others
- use a range of ways to build individual support
- change the system to support someone rather than simple trying to stop the person's behaviour
- reduce restrictive practices
Course benefits
This course will enable you to promote independence and dignity for those that you care for. The approach recognises the importance of communication, teamwork, and collaboration between caregivers, healthcare professionals, and the person receiving care to ensure high-quality, person-centred care.
The Award provides a direct progression route to Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care as they share several units or the Level 3 Award and Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities.
