Role of supervisors for Post Graduate Certificate (Level 7) & Advanced Diploma (Level 6) Leading Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) in Organisations

To successfully compete the course adequate supervision needs to be established within your organisation. Find out more about the role of a supervisor.

What is the role?

  • To support the student throughout the course.
  • Support the student to evidence competencies
  • Review materials and observe the student in the course to evidence competencies.
  • Sign off competencies when appropriate evidence is provided
  • Support the student with understanding and applying concepts on the course
  • Support the student through assignments where needed or requested.

What are the criteria?

  • Practice-based competency assessment will be completed by someone who meets the highest level of the PBS Academy standards for practitioners. Anyone assessing competencies should have undergone training and development to enable them to support and assess.
  • We always aim to work to PBS Academy standards, but at a time where we are skilling up the workforce, we understand this may not be possible at times. We hope through making these courses available this will help the region work towards these standards. Therefore, ideally the supervisor will possess a Level 6 qualification or above qualification in PBS/ABA or equivalent, with at least one year post PBS/ABA qualification in supervised practice from a more experienced practitioner.
  • When this is not possible the supervisor with a minimum of a level 5 qualification or above will be considered, pending demonstration of relevant experience and competence.
  • Additionally, a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience providing PBS support (as detailed in the PBS competence framework
  • All supervisors must meet the highest level of competencies in order to assess other competencies at this level.

What is the commitment?

  • Supervision will occur monthly for a duration of at least four hours per month, equating to a least 12 hours per module/3 months. This will be for the duration of the formal learning element of the PG Cert/ Advanced Diploma.
  • Supervision may include individual supervision; group supervision and a proportion should be in-situ. There should be at least one individual supervision per module. The guidance for the size of group supervision is no more than 3 staff who are enrolled on the course.
