Howden le Wear Community Centre, formerly the village school, was built in 1877 and comprises a single storey building of stone construction, under a predominantly pitched cement fibre slate roof, with flat felted roofs over the entrance foyer and toilet facilities. Softwood single glazed windows exist to all elevations, and flush panel timber doors are used for the majority of entrances and exits.

The property is a non-designated heritage asset suitable for a range of alternative uses including conversion to residential accommodation, restaurant/café use, retail or office space.
