Civic Roles
There are a number of civic roles in County Durham, including the Chairman of the Council, who awards the special Chairman's Medal - a civic award for exceptional achievements in County Durham.
Chairman and Vice Chairman
The Chairman and Vice Chairman of Durham County Council are the civic and ceremonial heads of the council. They represent the county council at a large number of events in the region.
Charter Trust
Durham City Council was abolished as part of the 2009 changes to local government in England. Durham City retained its Charter Trust status through the appointment of charter trustees.
Other civic roles
The Lord Lieutenant of County Durham is Her Majesty The Queen's personal representative in the county. He or she is appointed by Her Majesty, and the post is non-political, unpaid and held until retirement at the age of 75. The current Lord Lieutenant of County Durham is Mrs Susan (Sue) Snowdon.
Awards
The Chairman's Medal was the brainchild of former county councillor Edna Hunter. It recognises exceptional achievements in County Durham.
