Blackhill and Consett Park visitor information

The park was created on land gifted to the town by the Consett Iron Company, opening in 1891, to provide a green space where local people could relax, enjoy recreation and exercise in a beautiful parkland setting.

Opening hours

The park is open all day, year-round.

Access

There are several pedestrian routes into the park. The main entrance is located on Laburnum Avenue, opposite St. Aidan's Street.

There are two entrances further up Laburnum Avenue and Park Road, including one opposite the Genesis Way roundabout. This entrance is designated as part of the C2C cycle route (route 14) and takes cyclists down through the park to the main entrance.

Another entrance at the top of the park leads onto Aynsley Terrace, whilst a stepped pathway leads from The Promenade down the edge of the Blue Heaps and into the park next to the woodland area.

All pathways except for the Blue Heaps route are accessible to people using wheel-chairs and buggies. Please note that some sections of the park are quite steep.

Parking

There is a large free car-park area located next to the park. Vehicle access is either from Durham Road via Dixon Street or from Laburnum Avenue via Manse Street. Please show consideration and avoid parking in front of houses.

Dogs

You are welcome to walk your dog in the park. Please keep animals under control at all times and please note that dogs are not allowed into the children's play area, or on the bowling green. At busy times, and when there are events taking place in the park, it is recommended that dogs are kept on a lead.

Play area

The children's play area has recently been upgraded with new play equipment and safety surfaces. The work took place during the summer of 2021 and the result is a better quality, more versatile range of play equipment suitable for children of differing abilities and ages.
