Waste and recycling for community groups and schools

This page provides community groups and schools with information and resources on waste and recycling in County Durham.

Encourage your group members and pupils to like our Recycle for County Durham Facebook page to get handy tips and information on reducing waste, reusing, recycling and composting all throughout the year

Bag 2 School

Schools and community groups can raise funds by getting paid for collecting clothes and materials to be recycled through the Bag 2 School scheme. So far the scheme has raised over £30 million for schools and other organisations and in 2017 they collected 24,000 kg of clothes and materials in County Durham alone.

For more information on the Bag 2 School scheme call 01609 780 222 or visit the Bag 2 School website.

Free waste and recycling talks

Until December 2018 we're running free school assemblies and community group talks on waste and recycling across County Durham.

The talks will last from 20 to 30 minutes and include a PowerPoint presentation and will delve in to the ins and outs of what can and can't be recycled, where the recycling collected goes and what it's made into. The presentation will also cover home composting, reducing food waste and reusing items.

Each child or resident will also receive a 'Recycling Matters' leaflet which they are encouraged to share with friends, family and colleagues and a pencil made from recycled paper.

If you'd like to book a talk for your school or community group Contact Waste Management and we'll arrange a date and time convenient for you.

Educational resources

We have developed a free educational resource for schools and community groups, covering all aspects of waste and recycling from what can be recycled in County Durham to how to reduce your waste. The Waste Advice and Guidance for Schools (WAGS) pack also contains a list of other waste and environmentally related free resources. Contact Waste Management and we will send a pack out to you.

There are also good waste resources available from:

Road shows and community events

We hold road shows at events throughout County Durham promoting our waste and recycling campaigns including kerbside recycling, Love Food Hate Waste, home composting and reuse. If you're holding an event that you would like us to attend, please Contact Waste Management.
