Access Bus service


The Access Bus provides a timetabled bus service to popular shopping and leisure destinations for people who have difficulty getting about. The service covers towns and villages across the county.

Apply to use the Access Bus service or Contact Travel Response Centre to book a journey.

The booking line is open Tuesday to Thursday between 8.30am and 5.00pm, or Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm. You can book up to two weeks in advance. Bookings are made on a first come, first served basis so it's best to book as early as possible.

Who can use the Access Bus

You can use the Access Bus if you have a genuine mobility problem such as:

  • you are a wheelchair user
  • you have difficulty walking
  • you have a sensory impairment (blindness or deafness)
  • you are unable to get to the bus stop because of your health

The Access Bus will pick you up from your home address.

It goes to shopping and leisure destinations, depending on where you live, including:

  • Metrocentre
  • Prince Bishops Centre, Durham City
  • Arnison Centre, Durham
  • Bishop Auckland town centre
  • Darlington town centre
  • Hartlepool town centre

It operates Monday to Friday to a set timetable. Your journey may be shared with other users.

Using the service

The cost of the return fare is £1.50 to £2.50 per passenger.

All vehicles are fully accessible for people who are disabled or have mobility problems. Drivers will assist you on and off the vehicle if necessary. A carer or companion can travel with you if you need someone to accompany you. You must include them when you make your booking.

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be taken on the bus after being assessed. Small shopping trollies and rollators can also be taken.
