Standard Principles of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)


The course aims to improve Infection Prevention and Control standards in care settings and is delivered by The Infection Prevention and Control Team, North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (formerly County Durham Clinical commissioning Group). The session will enable staff to promote good practice and inform colleagues within their place of work.

Who the course is for

This training session is intended for care staff who work in a care setting in County Durham, provide direct care for residents and have an interest in improving infection prevention and control (IPC) standards within their place of work, for example the IPC care champion.

Learning method

The course is delivered face to face over 2.5 hours, a competency sheet is completed following the session to check learning and discussed/marked at the end of the session.

Staff can take away their completed sheet as an aide memoire.

What you will learn

By completing this course, you will have a greater understanding and knowledge of health care associated infections and infection prevention and control principles to ensure safe care of all residents.

Learning Outcomes

  • The importance of maintaining a clean environment.
  • Understand the safe handling of waste and sharps.
  • Demonstrate an effective hand washing technique and describe the principles of hand hygiene.
  • The importance of appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Understand the principles of basic catheter care.
  • Describe the principles and reasons for isolation.
  • Understand the symptoms and IPC care management of alert organisms, including Clostridium difficile, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bug (MRSA), respiratory illnesses and sepsis.
  • Knowledge of the Chain of Infection; preventing transmission of infectious diseases and the necessary controls to prevent spread and management of infected/colonised residents.

The training is free of charge.
