Peer Mentors - using your care experience to help young people

If you are over 18 and are care experienced, then you could become a peer mentor and help a young person who is about to become a care leaver.

As a peer mentor you would work with us as a volunteer and we match you up with a young person, who you hopefully have something in common with. You may share a hobby or interest, or perhaps you are from the same area.

You then arrange to meet up with the young person and chat with them about living in their own home, joining local groups or clubs, meeting people where they live and keeping up their friendships with people they know and other care leavers.

We also give the young person some funding to pay for you both to go and take part in activities together in your local community.

What we offer you

  • Training and development to make sure you feel ready for the role.
  • Funding for travel and activities with the young person.
  • Careful matching, including shared interests.
  • Supervision from our Peer Mentor Coordinator.
  • Support from others within our care leavers service, including our staying close coordinator and emotional wellbeing worker.
  • Support groups with other peer mentors.
  • Planned joint activities.
  • Building your CV with the experience you gain as a Peer Mentor.
  • A free DBS check

If you're interested in become a peer mentor or would like to ask any questions, please drop us an email on careleavers@durham.gov.uk.
