Muggleswick Conservation Area

Muggleswick is an isolated settlement on the north-east fringes of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Muggleswick has no village street or village green and is made up of a scattering of farmsteads. However, it has provided something of a focus for the local population as it does include the parish church in addition to the ancient grange.

The buildings are set out along the Muggleswick Burn, a tributary of the Derwent, and are accessed via a single dead-end lane.

Muggleswick is 18 miles to the north west of Durham City and six miles to the west of Consett.

The Conservation Area was designated in March 1994, and was amended in December 2011.

Muggleswick Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Proposals

To ensure County Durham's conservation areas are properly managed, we are producing Conservation Area Appraisal documents that will help raise awareness of their special character and interest. The Muggleswick Conservation Area Appraisal recommends ways to improve and to manage change as well as providing an interesting history and snapshot of the area.
