Lartington Conservation Area

Lartington is located approximately two and a half miles from the main market town of Barnard Castle. It forms part of a ribbon of dales settlements between Barnard Castle and Middleton in Teesdale.

Lartington Village has ancient origins and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Much of the unique character of Lartington today derives from the rebuilding and land improvements of Lartington Hall and estate in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Conservation Area was originally designated in 1984 and was reviewed and amended in 2012.

Lartington conservation area appraisal and management proposals

To ensure County Durham's conservation areas are properly managed, we produce conservation area character appraisal documents that will help raise awareness of their special character and interest. The Lartington conservation area character appraisal was formally approved by our Cabinet on 12 December 2012 and recommends ways to improve and to manage change as well as providing an interesting history and snapshot of the area.
