Blackhill Conservation Area

Blackhill Conservation Area is a late nineteenth/early twentieth century enclave in the heart of Blackhill, which is particularly high quality and relatively unchanged. The special interest of the area derives from the quality and architectural coherence of the buildings and the carefully designed layout of the area, centred on the extensive landscaped grounds of Consett and Blackhill Park and Benfieldside Cemetery, it is testament to the impact of the industrialisation of the area that occurred as a result of the opening of the ironworks at Consett.

The Blackhill Conservation Area was designated in March 1994 and reviewed in 2009.

Blackhill Conservation Area Appraisal

To ensure County Durham's conservation areas are properly managed, we produce Conservation Area Character Appraisal documents that will help raise awareness of their special character and interest. The Blackhill Conservation Area Character Appraisal was formally adopted by our Cabinet on 16 December 2009 and recommends ways to improve and to manage change as well as providing an interesting history and snapshot of the area.
