Annfield Plain Conservation Area
Annfield Plain is situated in the north west of County Durham, some 15 miles south west of Newcastle upon Tyne, 12 miles north west of Durham City and midway between the towns of Chester-le-Street and Consett.
The special character of Annfield Plain Conservation Area is derived from its rapid growth in Victorian times as a town associated with the coal mining industry and the connected railway development. The town centre still reflects its former Victorian grandeur, with two and three storey buildings with some original features, particularly at first and second floor level, and some traditional shop fronts.
The conservation area was originally designated in May 2003.
Annfield Plain Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Proposals
To ensure County Durham's conservation areas are properly managed, we are producing Conservation Area Appraisal documents that will help raise awareness of their special character and interest. These documents recommend ways to improve and to manage change as well as providing an interesting history and snapshot of the area.
The Annfield Plain Conservation Area was reviewed in 2012 and a draft appraisal was issued for public consultation. This resulted in a number of comments being received including various negative issues being raised regarding the condition and heritage value of parts of the conservation area. .
