Try fitness classes for free as Peterlee Leisure Centre reopens

To celebrate the reopening of Peterlee Leisure Centre on Monday 30 October, we are inviting you to come along and try out a selection of group exercise classes for free this weekend.

Try a class in the Skill X area

On Saturday 14 October and Sunday 15 October, from 8am to 2pm, new classes such as Les Mills Body Pump, Les Mills Body Combat, Les Mills Body Balance, Zumba, and Technogym Skill X, will be showcased in the centre's three revamped studios and sports hall.

Attendees will also be able to get a sneak peek at the new facilities on a tour of the building.

The refurbished gym area reopened earlier in the year and features the latest Technogym equipment designed to enhance the workout experience.

Customers most pre-register for the free exercise classes this weekend. Book online at Thrive leisure centres or by calling 03000 261 084.

The new regular exercise class timeline will be launched on Monday 16 October. Gym goers will be able to book on to the wide selection of classes through the website, app and the leisure hub online.

A new children's soft play adventure area will open on Monday 30 October alongside the new ten-pin bowling area and bar, which can be used by those with and without memberships, and a new café facility where customers can enjoy healthy options, drinks and snacks.

Fun for the whole family

Cllr James Rowlandson, our Cabinet member for resources, investment, and assets, said: "We are thrilled to be able to reopen Peterlee Leisure Centre following our ambitious refurbishment.

"As well as being a fantastic place to improve your wellbeing, there is a lot of fun to be had for the whole family in the new bowling alley and adventure areas.

"The work has been complete as part of our plans to transform and modernise our leisure offer in County Durham to support the health and wellbeing of our residents. We hope that the leisure centre can become a hub for visitors to enjoy for years to come."

More sustainable

During the refurbishment works the council has also taken the opportunity to introduce some carbon reduction measures, which include replacing gas boilers with air source heat pumps, and installing high efficiency LED lighting throughout, water saving devices and solar panels to produce electricity.

These measures will help the leisure centre to be more sustainable and reduce carbon dioxide usage by 300 tonnes a year.

Repairs to the swimming pool plant room are complete, however the pool will remain closed until 2024 as investigative works showed that the facility's pipework also needs to be replaced.
